Making your own toothpaste at home can be therapeutic. You should check with Dr. Linkous or Dr. Tran before switching from store bought toothpaste to homemade, as your personal oral needs may dictate that you need to continue using a specific toothpaste. Making toothpaste at home allows you to customize your toothpaste flavor and texture – which is pretty amazing considering the store variety don’t come with that many options.

How to Make Your Own Toothpaste

Whether you’re trying to be more budget conscious, eco-friendly, or just want to try it out, making your own toothpaste is a fun, healthy way to freshen your smile. Here’s our recommended recipe for creating your own DIY toothpaste.

DIY Toothpaste

Our recommended DIY toothpaste recipe truly does include only things that are good for your teeth! It’s important to understand the science behind some of these products before using them, as well as making sure that everything you’re using is actually healthy for your teeth.

  • 6 tsp baking soda
  • 2 tbsp coconut oil
  • 12 drops essential oil
  • sea salt to preference

Simply mix all of the above ingredients, then store them in an airtight container in a cool, dry place. If you’re using essential oils, glass is the preferred method of storage. We’d also recommend using a popsicle stick or some other sort of applicator to get the toothpaste onto your toothbrush. Putting your toothbrush directly into the container can promote bacterial growth.

Things NOT to do:

  • DON’T use hydrogen peroxide in toothpaste
  • DON’T dip your toothbrush into your toothpaste
  • DON’T store your toothpaste in plastic – glass is preferred
