Don’t Ignore Your Gums
August 29, 2018 12:15 pmMany people don’t realize how important it is to have healthy gums. Maintaining your gums will prevent issues with your teeth and beautiful smile. Here are a couple of reasons why you should pay attention to your gums:
Gingivitis
Gingivitis the earliest stage of gum disease and it is the first sign something is wrong. If you are experiencing sore or redness in your gums, tender and possible bleeding, you have gingivitis. Check your daily oral routine and make sure you are flossing at least twice a day, brushing twice a day and using mouthwash twice a day. Schedule an appointment or bring it up during your next visit.
Periodontitis
Periodontitis is an infection in your gums caused by buildup of bacteria. This disease can affect your overall bone density and gums in your mouth. If you are experiencing gum recession, this is an early stage of the disease. The pockets include harmful bacteria that will send your body into combat mode and will result in receded gums. If you start to notice this is happening, call our office immediately.
Effects of Periodontitis
If this is not treated, your teeth could start migrating, the roots of your teeth may become exposed, and the overall structure of your teeth will start to break down. This could also increase your risk of heart disease, respiratory disease, and diabetes.
Treatment for Periodontitis
At Riverstone Dental Care, we offer multiple periodontal treatments to help control or eliminate Periodontitis. First, we will take X-rays and conduct an overall dental exam to determine the best course of action. Once complete, we might consider root planing or scaling. This will help remove the damaged tissue and smooth out any patches of teeth that were affected. We may also prescribe additional medications or treatments to help get your smile back to tip-top shape.
