What’s a Tooth Abscess?

Plaque is a sticky film of bacteria that likes to make its home on the surface of your teeth. Good oral hygiene and trips to your dentist can keep these bacteria at bay. If the bacteria reach the inner pulp of the tooth or reach beneath the gumline, an abscess can develop. This abscess is a pocket of pus caused by the bacteria infecting the area.

Three Types of Dental Abscess

• 1. Gingival: A bacterial infection in only the gums with no infection to the surrounding teeth or tissue.
• 2. Periodontal: A bacterial infection of the supporting tissues of the tooth beneath the gum line.
• 3. Periapical: A bacterial infection within the soft pulp of the tooth itself. This can happen if you have an untreated cavity, crack, or other damage to the tooth.

What to Look For

The main symptom of a dental abscess is a constant, severe toothache. Some other symptoms of a dental abscess include:

• Bad breath and/or a foul taste in the mouth
• Fever (especially in the jaw and face)
• Tooth sensitivity and/or painful chewing
• Swelling of the gums, neck, and/or jaw

What to Do

If you think you may have a tooth abscess, it’s important to see your dentist immediately. Seeing your dentist early increases the likelihood of saving the tooth and preventing further complications.

Your dentist will examine the tooth as well as the surrounding area to assess the damage and come up with a treatment plan. They may also use X-rays and other graphing tests to determine which teeth are responsible for the discomfort.

If you’re unable to make it to the dentist immediately, you can mitigate the pain with over-the-counter pain relievers and fever relievers. Remember! Never place aspirin directly onto your tooth or gums. Topical aspirin could cause further irritation and trigger the formation of ulcers.
